Tbh, I like silent or mostly silent protagonists, but it's all relevant to the game. If the protagonist is someone who needs to talk, they need to talk, even if sparingly. Halo did a pretty good job at this, chief talks in cutscenes, when he needs to. Of course, he is a combat autist, however.
Artoym in Metro is kind of a silent protagonist, he never speaks on screen, but narrates his journal passages and he talks off screen.

But there's some great games with silent protagonists and I'll take more of them any day.
