@bunbun The issue with the UN is that they can't really enforce anything, they love passing resolutions and issuing declarations and this has more to do with applying political pressure or some countries giving some other countries the finger. The resolutions and declarations are just pageantry, they can and should be ignored completely, and the organization itself is both ineffectual (see the recent ruling on the South China Sea, or just look up any of the million resolutions they've passed on Israel/Palestine since the 1950s and see which ones actually worked) and ridiculously corrupt (see the Oil for Food scandal, for one). They overreach quite a bit because everything they do is effectively symbolic. Nearly anything they do is an overreach anyway: the scope is too broad. You can't actually declare very much if you're supposed to be representing every nation on earth, because there is no set of unified values. You've got secular western liberal democracies, you've got theocracies, brutal despotic regimes, you'll find very few things those countries can agree on fundamentally.

That's not to say it's completely worthless as an organization. They do have some research bodies, and humanitarian aid packages with the UN insignia on it are often more palatable to the people that decide if the aid is allowed into their country than if it had any given country's flag. The most important part of the UN is that they have put everyone into the same room to talk, so instead of sending an envoy or making a phone call, a diplomat can go talk to a diplomat.

People disliking the UN isn't too new. If there's more hate for it on the internet, this is probably because that's a political issue and the internet is just swamped with politics nowadays.
@p @bunbun If you’re a poor country, the UN can really fuck your shit up through economic sanctions and blockades.

There was a country in Africa that used private mercs to pacify it and was spectacularly effective. The UN (read USA) didn’t like this model so they shut it down and forced them to pay the UN for security. Incompetent boobs that they are, the warlords came back amd the country was back on the shithole deluxe track.

@Simpadoo @bunbun @p And yet, people say we need globalism to help those countries.

@xianc78 @bunbun @p I like the Old Star Trek’s Prime Directive. We should have that here and a lot of this Globalkarenism would not exist.

If course, it goes without saying that the woman suffrage should be abolished or it will never happen.
