Microsoft purchasing Activision Blizzard

This is a pretty significant development for the gaming sphere and will expand Microsoft's gaming market share from around 6.5% to 10.7%, at least according to some analysts.

But I'm certain that Microsoft will find a way to ruin this for themselves, just like they did with almost every other acquisition in the past.

We still haven't seen the results of their acquisitions from the last two years, but I don't think Microsoft inherently changed by appointing Phil Spencer as the head of their gaming division, even if they try to make it seem so.

I inherently don't trust Microsoft as a company and there is very little positive they've given to gaming as a hobby over the years, aside from creating competition for Sony.

Ultimately, Microsoft's end game in the gaming space is their subscription service Gamepass, which is just gaming's version of "You will own nothing, and you will be happy".

@okabe_rintarou Lucky for me, I was never into any of Activision/Blizzard IPs. I do find it ironic that Microsoft now owns one of Sony's mascots (Spyro).

I'd argue that Crash Bandicoot was more of a mascot for Sony back in the day, as they literally positioned him as their "Mario" at one point.

@okabe_rintarou Sony never really had an official mascot and I'm pretty sure they expected both Crash and Spyro to go multi-plat once their contracts with Universal expired. Spyro was clearly meant to capitalize on the success of N64 platformers like Super Mario 64 while Crash was more linear like most 2D platformers.

I also think that Sony never presented Crash as their mascot in Japan. Probably because Crash doesn't really appeal to a Japanese audience. They had some generic cat mascots.

But don't take my word for it. I never owned a Sony console. I'm only going off of what I've heard from those who grew up with the PS1.

From what I've seen, it seemed to me like Sony actually did position Crash as something of a mascot for PlayStation, at least at the time.
