If by centralized you mean not talking to other server. That might be true, but it's not like Discord's any better.
I'm with you. I prefer the IRC way. But for some normalfag who likes the look and feel of Discord. Having a FOSS version of it with all the same APIs and features. They'll like it. The important thing is to give Discord less control.
There's revolt and there's fosscord, two different projects.
There's one foss alternative to Discord called Revolt. The project has no plans to ever make it federate, though
