@iska @lina @Telvannichad @coolboymew @dushman @mangeurdenuage @arcanicanis The problem with any "linux distro for schools" is that school districts will use what they know about because nobody knows shit about tech, and kids are gonna just use whatever device they get to look at porn. See: the OLPC.
@PhenomX6 @lina @Telvannichad @iska @coolboymew @dushman @mangeurdenuage Except there's a new contender in the last decade: Chromebooks and iPads. I've heard and seen of a lot of school districts ditching Windows workstations for mobile devices, and I strongly believe Microsoft's efforts with UI redesigns, breaking legacy support and impose sandboxing on every application, and trying to shove everyone into dogfooding the Microsoft App Store (especially the antics of 'S mode'), forced Microsoft account, and retooling the OS towards Microsoft's cloud offerings is Microsoft trying to "kill the Chromebook". If schools don't have Windows-based devices, then Microsoft knows they lose out the future customer base.

@coolboymew @lina @PhenomX6 @Telvannichad @iska@mstdn.starnix.network @dushman @mangeurdenuage @arcanicanis My first laptop was a Chromebook back in 2013. I was able to get this weird Ubuntu-based distro running in parallel with Chromo OS on it, but it was still a piece of shit.

@xianc78 @coolboymew @lina @PhenomX6 @Telvannichad @iska @dushman @mangeurdenuage Chromebook hardware can be adequate, and one detail being overlooked is: I believe the system firmware of most (or at least early) Chromebooks were derived from coreboot, and there's third-party coreboot builds for a lot of Intel-architecture Chromebooks that can be flashed so it can be used as a very cheap general-purpose Linux computer without any Google bits, and with an open source motherboard firmware. I have a cheap refurbished ruggedized Lenovo ThinkPad-style X131e Chromebook flashed with coreboot that I use as a cheap in-the-field laptop, bought for only $65 from a NewEgg seller. Given that schools go through a lot Chromebooks, there's going to be a large refurb market.

@arcanicanis @coolboymew @PhenomX6 @iska@mstdn.starnix.network @Telvannichad @dushman @lina @mangeurdenuage I did eventually tried to install actual Ubuntu on it, but it ended up being worse (it was slow af) and I was a complete Linux newb at the time.
