Literally have had a 25 year sustained hate-boner for Sony.

@Moon It seems like the only things they will ever be known for are the Walkman and the PlayStation brand. Everything else is just useless junk that has better alternatives.

@Moon Oh yeah, they also made Blu-Ray but I think Sony fucked it up by making it an even more proprietary and DRM filled format than DVD and it was just a few years before digital downloads and eventually streaming took off. Now, it will have the legacy as a niche format like LaserDisc.

@xianc78 Wait a minute are you talking shit about laserdisc

@Moon No but LaserDisc was always a niche format for videophiles.

@Moon @xianc78 I wouldn't exactly call them "niche", considering they were basically mainstream in Japan all the way up to when DVDs really started taking off there.

@allison @Moon I think VCDs were also popular there. I heard that VHS didn't take off in many parts of Asia because the humidity levels would deteriorate them faster.

@xianc78 @allison VCDs were popular in poor Asia, I don't recall seeing many in Japan but I could be wrong. I saw commercial movies on 8mm tape though lol

@Moon @allison The Japanese Saturn supported them through an add-on.

@xianc78 @allison I think almost every CD-ROM attachment had an addon for it, I even saw them in the USA where there were zero VCDs
@Moon @xianc78 @allison I don't think I ever saw an actual, physical VCD; just torrents for them.
@djsumdog @xianc78 @allison the quality is dog shit, significantly worse than VHS.

I have a VCD bootleg of Star Wars: Phantom Menace, from Turkey. It looks almost-official, the only things that tip you off are the Mortal Kombat logo next to the VCD logo, and when the intro crawl starts you can hear the theater audience cheer.
@xianc78 @Moon There were a couple of good (mostly niche form factor) Vaios as well, but yeah, generally Sony has been on a major decline ever since the 1980s.

@allison @Moon I never messed with anything Vaios. My Dad was always a brand-whore for HP computers with Dell being a close second. The Vaious P looks comfy though. I always had a soft-spot for ultra-mobile PCs.

@xianc78 @Moon They're cameras are nice. I prefer them over Nikon. Also, I've owned an obscene number of their cellphones:

@djsumdog @Moon I forgot about their digital cameras. I don't remember what brand my parents used. I always had a lot more nostalgia for disposable cameras because I would always get one on vacations as a kid.

@xianc78 @djsumdog Their cameras were good but of course they used Memory Stick
@Moon @xianc78 oh yea, I hated those things. I left a bag with like 8 of them in a locker in a hostel in the middle of Australia 😡 .. I had already copied the photos off though. I only had them because my old Sony camcorder only used them, but my camera at the time took SD cards too. I've got a Sony 4k camcorder that only takes SDcards too.
@Moon @xianc78 @djsumdog I've always had a love-hate relationship with them. But few companies are better at making the goodwill they can get from a good product evaporate through some short-term, petty choice. Memory Stick is a good example. And even worse, once they lost that format war, they still had to make a dedicated format just for the Vita because god-forbid they be gracious losers and let everyone get cheaper storage, no they were going to milk the customers as much as they could.
@guizzy @xianc78 @Moon The Vita was the most insane thing. Why have a completely proprietary memory card?! And it didn't support multiple users, so if you people wanted to share a Vita with multiple account, you'd need multiple overpriced cards!
@guizzy @Moon @djsumdog @xianc78 The Vita memory card debacle was because Sony got hacked a year or 2 (hazy memory, sry) beforehand so they released with proprietary memory cards to minimize the risk to users having their info stolen. Anyway I run Enso on my Vita and I use a 256gb card with an adapter I got off of Amazon
@JungersGhost @xianc78 @guizzy @Moon oh yea, that hack. It took the PS network down for like a month. I didn't have a PS console back then, but I remember friends who couldn't do a lot with their devices. It's kinda amazing Sony recovered from that.

I sold my Vita years ago. I've thought about getting one off eBay just to hack and put custom firmware on.
@djsumdog @xianc78 @guizzy @Moon Millions of people had their credit card info stolen. Its a great device and it really is a shame that it didn't do as well as it could have. It was ahead of its time for sure.
