A SARS type coronavirus pandemic was obviously possible after SARS-CoV(-1) was a thing until it fortuitously died out, then in 2012 MERS-COV, as in Middle Eastern with a camel reservoir make it crystal clear SARS wasn’t a one off.
We’re also wondering if the late 19th Century “Russian Flu” pandemic wasn’t what became the human coronavirus OC43, one of four endemic ones before COVID, all of them significantly nastier than the average “common cold” virus.
