1: First Video Game: Captain Comic (1988)

Played it in 1989, as a tiny boy. I was immediately enchanted with the atmosphere of the game. It was surreal and had a sense of scale and many dreamlike landscapes. Those stars! I love it to this day.

The game is pretty challenging, especially if you don't know what you're doing. There's an order to progression, and "really" beating it requires getting all the treasures, not just the ones that "do something." But you can beat it in an evening (not that I could back then!)
@clipperchip I never had a C64! Missed out there. DID have a speccy tho.

@hermit In terms of gaming, you definitely did. The C64 (and later Amiga) were the major drivers for modern video games. But the ZX80 made the path for these machines.

@hermit Also, thanks for the tip about Desktop Dungeons. Never heard of it. Will give it a try.. once I finished with Ixion and the new DF release (which may take a while :)

@clipperchip @hermit its surprising to see people talking about df again because of that steam release

@opal @hermit How is it surprising? That release was expected for such a long time, so obviously it is a topic now.

@clipperchip @hermit its because i dont keep up with news or anything and i was the only one in my social circle really bringing up df, so thats why it confused me
@clipperchip @hermit i read about a possible steam release a while ago and just forgot about it because i like the original just fine

@opal @hermit It's been on Steam for like 5 years (just not available). And honestly, the new UX is much better than I ever expected. Still needs some work and fixes but overall it is really good. And the graphics tileset is equally amazing. Can only recommend.

@clipperchip @opal I've been considering getting back into it myself, last time I played was uhh...... well I think they'd just added Z-levels, lol.

Not sure how ready I am to tackle that learning wall again... I never did get the hang of militaries and squads.
@hermit @clipperchip if the steam version redid the squad system / interface then it truly is a good milestone for accessibility. i think i ended up figuring it out but it was still clunky. and in general, some similar tasks were spread out between wildly different menus, half the learning curve involves rote memorisation but after a while its really nice just to type stuff to navigate menus quickly

@opal @hermit @clipperchip Would it be possible to make a text-adventure in VimScript. I never messed with it.

@xianc78 @opal @hermit By the way, did you know that vim was originally developed for the Amiga? And in its first iteration (published on Fish Disk #591, the abbreviation was for "vi imitation"
