Self medicating may not be the best option but preventing someone from self medicating without giving them any actual medicine or doing anything to treat the issue they're self medicating is usually going to be a much worse option. Less effective medicine is still medicine, and simply removing the ineffective medicine will not cause a disease to go away.
"Well the first round of cancer meds didn't work so we're taking you off them."
"So am I getting a different set of meds?"
"No, we're taking you off the meds that didn't work, so that should fix all of your problems."
