:smug:
@lewdthewides @ben imagine wanting to do smth completely for free smh, so flawed
@sun_eater @lewdthewides @ben tbqh, i dont mind people wanting to see how the fediverse could be monetized, because the fediverse can be a parallel to big tech/mainstream stuff, but what sucks is that most monetization practices are essentially dumb
@mischievoustomato @sun_eater @ben I don't understand the obsession with wanting to make everything mainstream. If you left the mainstream, then that means you found the culture to be unbearable. The users made the culture unbearable, not the management or frontend software
@lewdthewides @sun_eater @ben I'm not exactly into making it mainstream, but just saying that it's sort of/can be mainstream. The thing about culture is that by the very nature of the fediverse the culture can be anything you want since you own your own space.
My main point is that I don't hate the idea of monetization if the practices aren't bad because people need to it and the situation all around the world for people isn't the best economically either because mainstream sites are also very restrictive.
@mischievoustomato @sun_eater @ben monetization is always the first foot in the door to more restrictions because eventually greed takes over if you stop seeing consistent growth
@lewdthewides @mischievoustomato @sun_eater @ben good fucking luck monetizing fedi

@skylar @mischievoustomato @lewdthewides @sun_eater @ben Pawoo is able to do it, but maybe that's because Japanese users don't know any better. Librem Social is another commercial instance but it's more of a bonus feature that you get for paying for their email service (which you shouldn't use btw because it literally asks for your home address even when paying with crypto).

I'm not necessarily against monetization either, I just think it's pointless if your server is small enough to be paid from your own wallet and/or donations.
