I made a promise that my next laptop would be a Linux one, but they're so expensive and I'm fucking broke. I would ask my Dad for help, but I know that he is a brand-whore for the big brands like HP and Dell and won't trust the smaller companies like System76 or ThinkPenguin.

Maybe I should just get a System76 Meerkat and find a portable LCD monitor. I've seen people done similar things with Mac Minis. Of course there is the whole power issue but maybe I could find a work around.

@xianc78 you'll just have to install Linux on a normal laptop like an prole

@PurpCat I wrote an article on why it's a bad idea. Though, as a last resort I think it's probably okay, but it soon won't be an option anymore.

@PurpCat @xianc78
HP had this "designed for linux" model, made in cooperation with System76: https://hpdevone.com/
It looks decent IMO. According to the website it's sold out, but maybe you can still find it at a discount somewhere.
@m0xEE @xianc78 if windows tax is your concern you can buy a HP business model without windows (they still sell this)
Back in 2005, we ordered Dells with FreeDOS for our call center and I'd image Linux on them. The bulk orders came came with a single FreeDOS CD! (per like 10 machines). I don't think they offer that any more sadly.
@PurpCat
ZBooks are their workstation-class laptops IIRC, running FreeDOS on these machines is such a waste anyway. They are probably required by law to ship it with some OS, that is why they use FreeDOS. And they are probably not using plain Linux as they don't want to provide support for it :marseylaugh:

@m0xEE @djsumdog @xianc78 It's something with Microsoft licensing that says it has to be "any OS".

Much of this was done for one main reason: businesses would get VLKs for Windows at this time and so you'd be buying Windows twice: once with your volume license and the second time with your PC.

Volume licensing is why those pirated copies of XP that didn't need online activation existed, or the KMS activation shit used a lot with Windows (which gained prominence among normies with pirated copies of 8, LTSB/LTSC, and Office).
@xianc78 @m0xEE it's the no os option so they just load freedos on it (since the windows contracts said it has to have an OS of some sort on it). It didn't say it had to have windows, just an os.

@PurpCat @m0xEE Would a PC-Booter program count as an OS? I would just put a simple PC booter text-editor or something like that.

@xianc78 perhaps a used ThinkPad with libreboot by @libreleah from minifree.org/ ? They are pretty good.

Consider refurbished.

Any specific needs for specs? What kinds of tasks will you be using the laptop for?
