Advent of Code… not sure if I'll do it this year, kind of want to stick to my projects (specially utils-std) or do non-code things like play some video games instead.

@lanodan Are these coding problems helpful at all? I kind of regret not doing that much programming during my teenage years.

@xianc78 To me it's quite too academic, not as project euler but same kind of deal.

That said I'm primarily a network dev, not like a multimedia dev where piles of math and hand-written parsers could apply.

It seems like I'm in the opposite situation as you. I mostly learned 2D graphic stuff because I never felt the need to write any network related stuff and I didn't have any access to servers or networking equipment, but I wish I did because it would've probably help me get a better job.

@xianc78 Heh server and better network equipment…

Never owned server hardware, just desktops and devboards.
I did get decent ADSL at my parents, but I moved at 16 (~10 years ago already…) where I did hotspots multi-homing on a 30€ second-hand laptop to get decent bandwidth (and downloaded large stuff at school).

btw reason Pleroma can set a custom base URL for media is because ADSL upload bandwidth sucks so I had a caching proxy on a cheap hetzner VPS for my own uploads. ^^’

I have fiber at home and pretty good equipment since few years now but for me that's recent.

@lanodan I only had an access to a desktop (with no administrative access) and a shitty netbook. I did learn PHP in high school, but that was through shared hosting.

@xianc78 Yeah root access on a machine and decent ISP, or some kind of okay hosting goes a long way.

But the rest… a toaster is fine, after all for at least a year I was hosting things on a RaspberryPi Model B, which I then upgraded to a second-hand BananaPi which I used for many years.
@xianc78 @lanodan network engineering is my forte and it hasn't helped me score an isp job or anything yet
