My hot take guesses on what Sony will do going forward with their “no disc 2028” decision:

1) Stay the course. All digital as is.
2) Redefine digital ownership ala GOG style. Make their own used digital market.
3) Announce all new storage medium like they did with the memory sticks/UMDs.

Place your bets. 😈

@NSonic79 I would go with number 3, assuming that the PS6 is going to be a hybrid console like the Switch.

@xianc78 it’s possible given their intent on creating their own format with memory sticks, UMDs and game carts for their PSP and PS Vita systems respectively back in the day. I could see them dying on that hill just to be stubborn.

@NSonic79 Sony possibly had that intention since the PS1 days. The story goes that they originally wanted to create a proprietary CD-based format that was slightly bigger than standard CDs. This would allow more data to be stored on the disc while also curbing piracy. This explains why the disc tray on the original PS1 model is bigger than it should be.

@xianc78 Is that why the dics had different backings vs traditional CDs at the time? I remember growing being told it was for piracy.

@NSonic79 No. The actual anti-piracy measure was a wobble on the disc.
