I used to love Doctor Who, but now I just can't stand it. It's hard to even rewatch it at this point knowing where it has gone and how downhill it has gone.

@sim

Same boat. It's still the best concept for a science fiction series. I suspect there was a C.S. Lewis as well as H.G. Wells influence.

But seriously, a person traveling through time and space defeating violent idiots by outthinking them... what's not to like?

Then they ruined it, like every television series gets ruined in its second season these days.

@amerika @sim It's really headfuckingly dissonant for me to think that this insanely popular thing now, is missing a good chunk of itself because people didn't consider it worthy and tossed it in the trash. If a time traveler went back to them and said, WAIT, THOSE ARE THE LOST DR WHO EPISODES! they'd look at you and say "wot? this trash? it just a kiddy show m8"

@Jazzy_Butts @sim

And yet, so much of human history and knowledge gets discarded exactly this way.

@Jazzy_Butts @amerika Insane. So many of the better stories out there started out as stories for children. Probably because they can't cheapen out as easily given the restrictions on it. Can't rely heavily on nudity or violence to bring people in.

@sim @Jazzy_Butts

In children's stories, you have to explain things to their roots.

Children are always asking "why?" In their stories, you have to address that.

Stories for adults too often simply accept what is and pick the best variant possible, without looking into the reasoning behind the thing in the first place.

@amerika @Jazzy_Butts That's a great point. I should consider that question of why more often.

Yeah, I have noticed that for some people, they just switch off as they get older while stories are told to them. They just like the pretty pictures the story shows, perhaps the action sequences. Even if it makes no fucking sense.
