Considering the current national minimum wage (~300USD) you can buy food for a month, pay bills and, if you're in the public housing system, pay for your house (10USD per month for 20 years and it's yours) and usually even save
That's if you're not in another social program, like the Basic Casket, which gives free food and cleaning/hygiene products or the again Family Purse, which gives money to poor people for free also, only attachments is having vaccines on day and all your children in school (and earn less than 1 minimum wage per person on family)
There's so much free stuff that yes, it does end up being worth it
