I love capitalism I love when the entirety of my existence circles around earning money in order to not starve to death. We should be happy that we live in good times and only 60% of our lifetime goes into work, and not 80% like ages ago.

@talviunelias In the past peasants actually had more free time. When not farming in the winter they hd fuck all to do and just hung out until planting season and then hung out again until harvest time.

@Jazzy_Butts @talviunelias there were also a lot more time consuming chores but yeah, working conditions and individual rights progress non linearly throughout history

we dont live in the best period of history, just a period of history
@cum @talviunelias @Jazzy_Butts note that technological advances that lead to less time being consumed for something essential do not historically make that time "free", but rather free to be reallocated for another piece of work
@cum @Jazzy_Butts @talviunelias ie the advent of the car did not reduce the amount of time working, but rather increased it, because the car could get you to work and back from work easier

similarly, the sewing machine was revolutionary in labour reduction for sewing, which meant the labour spent there was yet again reallocates
@errante @talviunelias @Jazzy_Butts if we manage to overcome the need for sleep with no societal replacement we would just be working even more 😭

its also interesting to think about why caffeine is so popular as a drug under capitalism :zt_think2:
@cum @talviunelias @Jazzy_Butts ill find the extracts theres a couple of pages in here about labour saving mechanisms

noticed this while typing out earlier:
it really all comes back down to jevon's paradox

@errante @talviunelias @cum I just know they worked fewer hours, and they had more sex, that's what I've heard
