If you've never seen Dr Sleep and you like the shining I promise you Dr Sleep doesn't disrespect the original at all. It kind of made me realize that one of King's most used allegories are about child abuse, likely sexual but it is never explicit in his stories. Dr Sleep is no exception. The abusers are a clan of vampire like beings who feed off the suffering of people who "shine", usually children, to do this they inflict massive suffering, the more suffering, the more they can feed. I won't spoil the ending, but the story shows no mercy to these monsters, even after humanizing them, and if it were anyone else's story I would say it's to make us question if our heroes are really good guys themselves, but since it's King I think he just really hates child abusers that much and wants to make their suffering as ugly as possible not to elicit sympathy, but, as one character says to them in the story, "it's what you deserve."
