They immediately started an all out war with a technologically superior species instead of trying to coexist (like the bugs were already doing) and are going to be wiped out because of it

The NPCs we’re arguing have no recognition of an outgroup that wants to kill them and will be killed themselves whenever any outgroup wants to kill them. There is no recognition of a need to defend humanity from bugs, no recognition of a potential threat from an alien species, just moral judgments against humanity for starting the war.
