Hate it when I feel the weight and fear of the world; should probably hide somewhere comfy in VR for a while.

@ThrowawayAI I don't have vr but I have been playing doom 2016 with the gyro controls and it really helps with immersion and fun. I've been curious about vr but don't know where to start, especially on a budget of under 1,000 (under 500 preferably but I know even basic level is going to be expensive)

@Jazzy_Butts Quest 3 is 500 bucks and it's amaaaaaazing actually; better than a lot of more expensive setups (Unless you want full body tracking then you may have to look into other stuff; I'd love to have FBT but it's honestly quite limited in use at the moment, but it is really cool in the places it works like bein' a slut on VRChat)

You can also go Quest 2 for 200 bucks now which is honestly quite similar to Quest 3 when talking about VR but it has much more limited AR and hand tracking (The AR cameras are greyscale and the hand tracking requires more light and contrast as there's no scanning laser like the Quest 3). It is a bit weaker than the 3 but this really isn't that noticeable cuz it's also a bit lower resolution.

Both of these headsets are stand alone and can also be used to connect to your PC wirelessly for PCVR stuff if you have a good PC. Even if you don't though you have access to a LOT of great games on Quest.

I can talk to you about other stuffs too and see what you are interested in but I do think that Quest is a great place to start and Quest 3 is my daily driver; almost any time you see me here I'm in it haha.

@ThrowawayAI I heard the quest fed data about you to facebook/meta?

@Jazzy_Butts I'm really not worried about it; whenever it asks about sharing data I just say no, and I don't have my facebook account attached in any way, not because I distrust facebook in the privacy way (I do distrust them) but because if I were to get banned on facebook it might affect my ability to use VR and I don't trust Facebook to not ban me for silly things (they haven't yet but I don't trust that).

The main thing they WANT to collect is scan data and again, they prompt for this stuff. They are using it for improving their environment saving and tracking tech. But if you opt out they definitely aren't sending it, and they aren't sending video data of any kind ever (too dense and VERY obvious on the network).

It doesn't seem like things are sending anything other than basic anonymous app telemetry that everyone collects these days.

Your other option for standalone in this price range is Pico but there's also concerns about that headset leaking data to China? And I see people having a lot of trouble with them if they aren't as technical.
@Jazzy_Butts I know that we have a lot to fear but like, everyone's tracking everything to some extent. Like ISPs have full history of every site you've hit; not every full URL mind you; on HTTPS that is encrypted in the request, but they know how often I've hit refresh on Rape.pet for example. I'd distrust my ISP who are gonna bend to any requests ahead of Facebook which really just wants to increase advertiser reach and want to maintain their own privacy. ISP is nosy enough to scan for torrent shit and logs IP shit for that lol. Facebook just wants info about what you might want to buy (and they aren't great at utilizing it either otherwise they'd have much better ad targeting lol).

Truth is if you are on the internet you are leaking data.
