Imagine parents who actively encourage you to be weak and to "turn the other cheek" and they treat you with shame when you beat up bullies or when you get beaten up by bullies, so that you always feel like there is something wrong with you for wanting to be a hero, for wanting to crush the hands of true evil, to sear its mouth shut, to sear its eyes closed, to sear its ears closed, and then to flay it. Imagine the weight you would have to shrug off your shoulders before you could live with pride, instead of shame, for fantasies of fiercely punishing evil. /vent
