Just so I can once a decade defend people many laugh at, I do actually support non-binary people. Just let me use the words, that are specially created to solve the problem you face.

@LukeAlmighty Yeah, linguistically `it` is the correct approach. I too made the mistake once of suggesting it, thinking that trans activists were genuinely interested in ungendering the language.

But it was never about language, but rather about social activism. So because it's about changing society to be more accepting, rather than about reforming the english language, I think it's not going to work.
@fluffy @LukeAlmighty it is a non-human pronoun, derived from common indo-european inanimate neutral. the correct way to address a person of unspecified/nonbinary gender is singular they, which is just as linguistically valid (it's been used since middle english)
@tuxcrafting @fluffy @LukeAlmighty

just use 'it' as default for people that don't like he/she and if they complain then tell them they're performing speciesism
@tuxcrafting @LukeAlmighty >it's been used since middle english

i have read everything from Beowulf to Russel and never have I encountered such a thing as the singular they. you've probably been lied to about this.

>derived from common indo-european inanimate neutral
If you are going to make an argument using etymology, then the neutral pronouns in english are spelled him/his, not to be confused with the male pronouns which are also spelled him/his. In english, after all, there is no problem with two different words having the same spelling. It is the same in Latin.
@fluffy @LukeAlmighty even if, singular they is used quite widespreadly now and especially considering english doesn't have grammatically significant gender there's no reason to use masculine pronouns neutrally
@tuxcrafting @LukeAlmighty
>singular they is used quite widespreadly now
sure many elite people use it but our friends are very far from representative.

I will eat my shoe if even one percent of the english-speaking population has once used the singular they unironically. what exactly are you basing your statement on?

>there's no reason to use masculine pronouns neutrally
I'm not proposing policy.
@LukeAlmighty "faggot" sounds like the right way to address those attention whores.
@LukeAlmighty defending a delusion isn’t that helpful.
Helping them to be comfortable with who they already are works better.
