parenting

would it be crossing a line to watch your childs' internet usage closely up until age ~14?

re: parenting

@nik Yes, because that is the agespan where they are discovering themselves and your kid is just gonna find ways to hide that they're looking at boobs. More restrictions on children just encourages them to lie better.

Just talk with your kid regularly about what they're doing online to make sure they aren't meeting 17/f/cali Bob

@kaikatsu see: follow up post though

my goal wouldnt be to restrict access outright, but instead to watch what's going on and step in if there's a problem. of course constant healthy communication is still a good idea.

aside though, i need to work on getting the idea out of my head that parents and kids have to hide things from each other, because in how my family was structured that was the only way to survive. but i know it's possible to do away with that from seeing my best friend's relationship with his mom

I seriously do hope you're joking in here. Kids do deserve some privacy and dignity. If you cannot ensure dignity to your kids, they won't be able to strive for it in the future.

Let them keep some secrets, and make sure they know they don't have to fear you. You spying on them will make them resentful anyway, so it is a bad idea to do so from every single way you look at it.

re: parenting

@LukeAlmighty @kaikatsu i worded it poorly, that kids inherently have to be super super secretive towards their parents (like i was) in order to survive. this idea in my head comes from the fact that if i was actually honest to my parents about things that were actually really important to me they would have kicked me out (which they did in the end). so i became a black box.

i dont want my kids to be scared and have to be a black box
