This is why I hate the “mainstream” trans community. It’s toxic, dishonest and mostly bullshit.

People should transition if they have dysphoria and its making their life miserable and maybe even putting them at risk for suicide. Not “for fun”, “muh gender norms” or “I want to be special / pretend to be an oppressed minority”.

This isn’t my post, but an example of the kind of opinions that get instantly banned.

Being trans is pretty terrible, but the worst part of it is being automatically associated with the lunatic leftists.

@shebang I do agree with you. Totally with one exception.

I do not believe the transition ever helps.

That being said, I have the same approach as for going to life long debt.

Before it happens, do whatever you can to stop them.
But after it happens, do not attack them. They have a ton of problems already...

@LukeAlmighty @shebang If someone wants to transition as an adult, that's totally within their rights. It can help in some cases and others not so much. It's very individual. We need more objective research in this area (and it's hard to do right now cause politics).

But motivating kids and even very young adults to transition is problematic. Puberty blockers can cause sterility just like HRT. And I think it should be acceptable to at least offer treatment where a therapist works with someone to be comfortable in their existing body; similar to other dysphorias such as anorexia and body integrity disorder. I don't consider 'being okay with who you are' the same as 'conversion therapy' for homosexuals (which is just silly ... but once again, if you're adult and want to .. should still be offered).

shebang, you're pretty awesome; a transwoman, yet conservative, willing to talk about these super difficult topics. I'm curious, and forgive me if I'm being an ass, but do you think it's okay to offer therapy for those struggling with gender dysphoria, to be okay with their biological sex, or is that problematic? Do you think doctors do a good job of preparing people for all the issues encountered in transitioning? What do you think about phrases like, "They're denying my existence;" are they phrases you use, or do you think they're ideological?

@djsumdog Damnit I wrote a big reply but I got distracted by some troll and clicked away. Ooookay lets go again.

and forgive me if I’m being an ass

Just asking a question is never being an ass :blobthumbsup:

(well, an honest question, not like “Why is your mom a whore?” is perhaps a bit different)

do you think it’s okay to offer therapy for those struggling with gender dysphoria, to be okay with their biological sex, or is that problematic?

Its problematic, because its ineffective. Our brains are just wired differently, you can’t fix that through therapy anymore than you could become taller through therapy. If it did work then I would think that would be the first choice for treatment — but its not even remotely effective.

Do you think doctors do a good job of preparing people for all the issues encountered in transitioning?

Not really. Some do, most don’t. The biggest problem is that its all so political now, when its really just a fairly mundane birth defect (or “error in the replication process” I like to say). The whole political aspect is a highjacking, almost none of these college kids who claim to be trans aren’t — if you are a young white girl going to a nice college its hard to claim to be oppressed, after all — unless you co-op someones medical condition, of course. The politics hurt actual trans people who really don’t want the attention and just want to buy groceries and go to work.

I could go on about this, because, the trans support groups in my area are all young women playing at being trans, whom I have nothing in common at all with, and almost every actually trans people I know won’t go to the groups for the same reason — even if they are also far left! So they have actually destroyed our support infrastructure. A friend of mine who is at least borderline SJW won’t even go because of this.

Worth noting too, the political bend is frustrating for people like me who aren’t left: because its a medical condition, and medical conditions aren’t selective based on politics, it means that anyone who isn’t also far left gets chased out of their own community and support structures — or they have to lie.

Doctors recommend these groups, but most trans people never go more than a few times because of this, but are too afraid of the political backlash to say anything about it, much less do anything about it. I’ve just been pretty much on my own.

What do you think about phrases like, “They’re denying my existence;” are they phrases you use, or do you think they’re ideological?

Its ideological nonsense, and usually applied to the totally fake tumblr genders the “I’m a demigirl” and “my gender is the moon” blah blah. Its dumb kids being dumb, hurting the very people they claim to be activists for, and then just washing off their costume when its time to get a job or they meet the right boy.

I generally hate to link to videos because videos are an annoying interruption to process. But this one is particularly good — if you watch the first 15 minutes or so, this doctor lays it all out pretty well. The rest of the video is fairly technical discussion of that actual medical process and rather dry. But he answers a lot of myths and misconceptions about trans people in a clear way.

@shebang
Global warming, Concentration camps, Gender dysphoria...

There are just some topics, where standart ways of research no longer apply, because there are too many idiots pushing one paper after another no matter how shitty as long as it supports them. And on the other side, there are opinions on the same topic, that can be perfectly measurable, but forbidden from print.

Sorry, but I just don't even care to read yet another cherrypicked example on this minefield.

One paper means nothing. 10 mean nothing as long as you cannot 1) read and evaluate the papers and their methods. 2) see both sides.

For example, this is what a proper source looks like.
kill-or-cure.herokuapp.com/a-z

If I wanted to know if HTR causes or cures cancer, this is the kind of source I would need to make ANY good assumptions.

@LukeAlmighty Well, if you aren’t going to read any of it, or even click the link — because its a fairly large collection of studies — then we really shouldn’t bother talking anymore.

You’ve decided we’re circus freaks, and I disagree, so I guess we are done.

@shebang
"circus freaks"

I have neither used this phrase, not even believe it. but if that is how you see yourself, you have proven my point. bye.

@shebang
Bye

Definition of bye (Entry 2 of 2)
—used as a shortened form of goodbye to express farewell
