@Loki @LukeAlmighty And X and Y's animations were disappointing on the 3DS, FFS, Blastoise was shooting water from his mouth, but not his trademark cannons!

I feel like I have to be careful here.

While all you said was true, I'm personally not too bothered by it. I always saw the individual games as their own thing and never really used generational transfers, but even so, it should've been possible, I agree.

About how "dumbed down" it is though: I think the founder of Game Freak said numerous times that the games are supposed to appeal to as many people as possible, so essentially to the lowest common denominator. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, I'm happy for everyone that can enjoy that franchise (mainly kids).

As for the main reason I personally think not so Pokémon were included: possibly balancing issues and the additional work/time needed for new animations in PokeCamps.

Lastly, I see it as a positive thing that all Pokémon get experience now. It shortens unnecessary grind.

But ultimately, the more I play Pokémon Shield/Sword, the more I get the impression I've just grown out of Pokémon, the mainline games at least.

There is a serious fallacy here. 5yo kids could finish pokemon red. Twitch could finish old pokemon games. There comes the point, where by lowering the difficuilty, you do not include anyone, yet you still loose a ton of people.

BTW, do you know what are some of the most inclusive games? Solitare and Tetris. Both of them are too difficuilt for me to enjoy, yet their audience is HUGE. Same for mobas.

@LukeAlmighty @okabe_rintarou @ArdanianRight @Loki I don't think any of the older Pokemon games required grinding, you just had to fight the Trainers on your path to remain decently leveled. In Sword/Shield it seems GF's solution to mandating use of the Broken EXP Share was to dramatically cut down on the number of Trainers you could fight (and most of the trainers available could be defeated by just having your Starter spamming the same move over and over again).
@ChristiJunior @LukeAlmighty @ArdanianRight @Loki It's weird bringing up Solitair and Tetris here. Those are timeless games and were introduced a long time ago.

All I can say is that the times have changed. Of course 5 year olds could still play the old Pokemon games, it's just that there are so many distractions in today's world and also mobile games.

I can only speak for what I've noticed, which is that the attention span has gone down massively in today's world. While I would cherish every GameBoy game back in the day and play a game for weeks and months, how many people/kids do that nowadays?

There are also more "girl gamers" nowadays who literally want to walk around in a game if possible - someone posted some Twitter screencaps just yesterday.
@okabe_rintarou @ArdanianRight @Loki @LukeAlmighty Zelda: Breath of the Wild is by far the best-selling Zelda game ever, and it's also the hardest 3D Zelda. It has actually sold more than Pokemon Sword/Shield did, despite being much harder and lacking hand-holding.

Of course, if Game Freak really worried about difficulty and grinding turning off casual players, they could have introduced multiple difficulty settings. Instead they went with the worst and laziest option available.

Different tastes exist. Since the following comparison still seems to be popular among game journalists: BotW is the Dark Souls of the Switch (excluding Dark Souls), doesn't mean every game should be just like it.

I hate to use the word strawmen, but did you really just compare dark souls to a game that a fish can finish?

Did you know, that there are at least some games, that are between these two extremes?
