Most Romanians aren't Gypsies, and most Gypsies aren't Romanian. That dumb name just creates a lot of confusion, which might have been the intention all along (Gypsies abroad usually flaunt their nationality, not their ethnicity).

Yeh, I'd have assumed Romany, Roma etc Gypsies were people left by the Romans when the Roman empire shrank or whatever, they became Gypsies but still had heritage from the Romans, maybe cutlery or identification. Either that or a rewording of the word now used 'roaming'.
