hot take

windows 7 is basically windows vista.1

hot take

@null That's actually not that hot of a take. The real hot take is that Vista (as distinguished from Longhorn) was a completely necessary evolutionary step in the right direction and that Microsoft tends to set goals that are way too ambitious for their own good (I get the feeling we will see history repeating itself here with Windows 11)

re: hot take

@allison @null as much as vista was "a bunch of features for digital hubs, cancelled by iPhone" and "MVS mismanagement for the new century", it was also very much "technical debt restructuring program" and that would have been controversial from the stuff it would have had to broken, albeit for good reason

re: hot take

@libc @null That combined with a few unpolished parts (original UAC) and the steep hardware requirements tax for the time are honestly most of the reason Vista was as hated a release as it was.

re: hot take

@allison @null eh, vista's requirements were reasonable; 7 was basically the same. the problem is XP let OEMs keep selling 2004 bottom of the barrel HW well into 2008, and pikachu face when it runs vista like a dog

re: hot take

@allison @null for reference, i was running a pentium d with 1 GB of RAM in 2007 - vista was fine on such HW

re: hot take

@libc @null I ran it on a Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM around the same time, it wasn't a speed demon but it was definitely enough to scrape by particularly if you disabled all the superfluous chrome

@allison @null @libc
It is definitelly not a hot take, since i ternally, microsofts uses a version 6.0 for vista and 6.1 for win 7.
