OK, so bell curve time...

20%ish of artists are really good

20%ish are really bad

The rest are in the middle, which means forgettable and they'll end up drawing Christmas cards or sculpting lawn figurines.

The lower 80% need some way to justify their existence, so they create this mystical aura of drama around artists.

Most people look at that and say, "Oh, useless effete eaters."

The few good artists tend not to be that way, but they are very few.

Same way with music.

The top 20% of death metal bands really don't need any introduction; you just listen and say "I get it."

Everyone else has a complicated bio, uses weird instruments, odd production, strange backstory, etc.

Just standard human monkey drama.
