Look at how cool and open the internet users to be when it was just the nerds and geeks using it. Then Facebook got everyone and their grandma (literally) online and now the internet is shit.
I don't want fedi to become shit by going mainstream.
A little gatekeeping is okay as long as you make it easy enough for anyone to actually join.
e.g. or
They gatekeep by not having a handholding GUI installer because they don't want to deal with the "dumb/noob" questions that come with it and that's fine because it's fully documented and anyone can learn how to install it and join the community if they choose.
A little gate keeping / barrier to entry is fine as long as the necessary tools to join are readily available to anyone winning to put in the time to learn.
