I just cannot immagine what kind of conditioning can lead a mercenary to go to a different country, kill people and risk his own life to add a bit of land to country he doesn't own.

I guess there aren't many other ways to go and fly jets...
@LukeAlmighty If you have a certain set of skills, after you leave your country's military you can apply it to being a mall cop, or put a badge on and get jerked around by civilians.
Or you can go someplace ugly, do hard things, and make serious bank.
I wouldn't do it, but it doesn't seem irrational.
