Vee is missing a point in this one.
There is no society to be defended. A heroic person will not be celebrated nor appreciated. He will be arrested or even shot. That is the LAW in the US.

Also, second: The lack of belonging. You might risk your life for a person you saw once, but when you never see the same person twice (as it happens in big cities), you become a true individual.

And third: When is the last time you had a beer with a random person??? Enough said.
