No, debates are needed more then ever before. People have brains so mushed, they believe, that wanting the election process be transparent is an insurection.

@LukeAlmighty If debates actually discussed stuff like that and actually tried sure. Next time you watch a debate look for what I'm about to list.
1) both parties are uninterested in exchanging ideas and just want to "win".
2) the one "losing" will start using gay words like "fallacy" and the next hour and a half will only be about that one moment, no longer about the topic.
3) when one party stutters or makes a grammatical error the discussion will now only be about that one moment
4) if one party doesn't have a "case study" on something as retarded as Chinese holistic medicine during a debate about NATO its just all over.
