As recently as 50 years ago the West could plausibly claim military supremacy, but war has moved on since then. Guerrilla war blurred the lines between friend and enemy, and now what we might call "Info Wars" has brought that confusion to the home front. This makes Palantir CEO Alex Karp's comments about Western superiority all the more absurd, since anonymous internet trolls have forced an impossible choice on Western elites: between maintaining power, and the mythology of the open society.
If we understand 5GW as substantially memetic warfare, not just in a meme-tier way but as serious ideological warfare, it changes the whole game. To a government that hates the governed, simply presenting what is not pathological is dissent, and dissidents wage a war of attrition against an enemy that is hemorrhaging resources already, bleeding it dry basically anonymously. As time goes on and the lines of battle become clear, it also becomes clear just why the enemy is acting so hysterically: they are in deep trouble on multiple fronts.
