@dave we should just make a new unit of measuring temp. 0 is freezing 200 boiling. More fine tuning of temperature that would be better for measuring human comfort.

@top Nah celsius is fine as it is. Adding a 4th temp scale to the mix is literally just doing the meme

@dave @top In the case of chargers:

"We'll make our own standard so the competition don't get to make gear for us, and so we can milk the market that we carve out for ourselves, he he."

@blobfrog @top I’m glad the EU passed that law mandating USB-C for exactly that reason. Proprietary shit needs to go

@dave @blobfrog @top What happens if you make a new device that uses mini-USB and sell in in the EU? Jail?

@caekislove @blobfrog @top The question is: Why would you make a new device that uses mini-USB?

@caekislove @blobfrog @top Actually, I think all the people that ever made any mini-USB devices should just go to jail anyways

@dave @blobfrog @caekislove @top
I am actually quite pissed at that law.
Because if tomorow, USB D is created, and it's superior, it will take these clowns 30 years to let EU finally use that thing too.

I guarantee, that this law will hurt the entire IT industry. It will be like PS5. Noone will use it, since all devices will still have to be sold in Europe too, so they will bend over backwards to just fit in USB C anyway.

@LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @caekislove @top Part of the beauty of USB-C is that you can add new standards if you want, it’s mainly about

Making sure the cables and chargers aren’t going to wind up as e-Waste
Making sure you’re not having to buy/produce extra chargers and cables just because someone (Apple) wants their shit to be proprietary

@dave @blobfrog @caekislove @top
You used to be able to add new standards on USB A too. Technology just does move on. And laws rarely do.

@LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @caekislove @top Type-C solved a few common annoyances that couldn’t be fixed with new data protocols:

Mini/Micro connectors wearing out due to moving parts on cheap connectors, which end up getting inserted/removed hundreds or thousands of times on devices like your phone
Especially with Type-A, it felt like it took an average of 3 insertion attempts to actually plug the damn thing in. And with mini and micro, you still needed to remember which way to plug in your connector, which is going to be different for each device. Now you can do it blind on the first try with all devices.

Yes...
That is my point against that stupid law.
Thanks for clearing the points up a bit.

@LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @caekislove @top But Type-C is a good connector, and USB was already almost universal anyways. What problem is “USB-D” going to fix that your average consumer has?

@dave @blobfrog @caekislove @top
I know the internet intellectuals like you hate this anwser but:

I don't know

I don't even have to. Because the principle is constant. More widespread technologies will always come with new requirements.

@LukeAlmighty @dave @blobfrog @top Imagine how easier everything would be if the government had made a law only allowing USB-A! Everything would JUST WORK!!

@caekislove @LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @top As I recall the law does have carve-outs for if you can provide good justification that your device actually needs a proprietary connector. This is just targeting the companies creating e-Waste and forcing consumers to pay extra for something that provides no real benefit.

@dave @LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @top I'm mostly just memeing. If something legit way better than USB-C came along, I'm sure they would just pass a new law changing the standard.
@caekislove @dave @LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @top If you want to do anything about USB, first start with bullying the standard board for changing the names of every version on every fucking update.

It doesn't even makes sense to certify something knowing that they will change the change the names cause confusion regardless.
@dave @LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @top That... would be one way they could get Americans to stop using cash. 😅

@caekislove @LukeAlmighty @blobfrog @top Fuck you, I’d switch to cash if this was what I got to carry around

@caekislove
Just wait till you see USB-D Hybrid Thunderblast 3.3x2 gen 4, Ultra speed!!!1
