The main cost is childcare, because either you earn enough as a single-income household to pay bills, have housing and be financially stable while your wife stays home with the kids or you earn enough for daycare, which is a substantial additional cost per child. With a SAHM, the marginal cost per additional child is negligible compared to the additional cost of daycare and private schools (have you seen the public system?).

I mean yeah, if you live close enough, if they're in good enough health to care for multiple kids under five, and if they're happy to essentially work 50 hours a week as an unpaid daycare without having a job themselves... Not true for most people.
