Wait a minute...
Unpaid internships are real in USA?

@LukeAlmighty Yep. Gawker had around 10 full-time unpaid interns writing blog posts for them while running a series about "Unemployment Stories" and "Fight for $15".

@caekislove
to be fair, we had that in high school....
2 weeks total, and they were, so our school could get space for entrance exams for newbies.

And all the requirements were a letter that we attended. So one of them was me literally sitting in a back of a shop for a week.

@LukeAlmighty These interns had to commute to New York City, work 8-10 hours in an "open office" and then go drinking with Nick Denton's grabby pervert friends after work. All for "Experience" and "making connections". 🙄
@caekislove @LukeAlmighty iirc people working on the campaigns of Democrat politicians often make peanuts, even if the politician is specifically running on higher minimum wage.
@Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum @LukeAlmighty Politics is a little different since everyone expects sweet appoointments and the bribes that come with them if their guy wins.
@caekislove @LukeAlmighty @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum Interns don't get shit. They're doing it as volunteers because they believe in the candidate because this one is totally gonna change the woooorld maannnnnn.
@BowsacNoodle @LukeAlmighty @caekislove @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum
Interns are paid in "experience" and "exposure" but everyone knows it's just another boomer scam for free labor and to keep dangling the carrot
@BowsacNoodle @LukeAlmighty @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum All I've gotta say is Rahm Emmanuel must suck a mean dick. He's "interned" his way to White House chief of staff, mayor of Chicago and now Ambassador to Japan, all without demonstrating any aptitude or capabilities whatsoever! 😂
@BowsacNoodle @LukeAlmighty @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum There's also people like Neera Tanden and John Podesta who are basically camp followers who are only employed in meaningless political offices by their patrons whenever Democrats control the White House. I'm sure there's Republican examples, as well.
@caekislove @LukeAlmighty @Rudolf_von_Goldenbaum Clintons basically confirmed House Of Cards was accurate depiction of political garbage. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a "Stamper" for every big name.
Typically when they're out of office someone gives them a sinecure to keep them looking busy and important. It's expected to be repaid with favours next time they're in office.

@LukeAlmighty Yeah, much of the time kids will do them for a while, the real extreme ones will keep going while their parents pay their bills. In such a case the idea is that they’re showing the company how much they want to work for them, and expecting their free work to be rewarded with a full time position.

(it’s not always rewarded, though they will pretend that getting a 15% discount on MSPR is an employee benefit)
