It is a country at war, and he did a propaganda for the other side. I have seen people go to jail for much less sensitive topics.
I think, they won't give him life, just so they don't seem "too cruel", but he will finish his jail sentendce under a different government.
@LukeAlmighty this man survived (allegedly) a freefall from 10.000 feet while parachuting so I think he'll be fine
