Why is there so many Gundam series?

@LukeAlmighty Do you want a "shorter" self contained series, or the longer series that most fans like to talk about? I haven't watched everything, but I've seen a good deal.

I seriously don't know, if I will manage to stay beyond the first episode :D
But a famous story does sound nice.
It's old and dated, but the common starting point for the biggest Gundam universe (Universal Century, or UC for short) is the show simply called Mobile Suit Gundam. If watching 50 episodes is too much then there are some movies that can make the experience shorter.
