A friend gave me this tip about fighting the battle talus, that I could get on it with Ascend. It was theoretical, but it seemed like a good idea. I tried it and it worked when you target the wooden planks on top of it. But then I saw that you can just use the talus' own body, which is technically rock, to go through its arse and emerge on its head. 
I don't know why this talus became retarded, but it just started walking around in circles and not even shaking me off. It was hard just to stay on. It's the second talus that does this.
Anyway, I have a lot of talus hearts now.
