That is bullshit though.
As you said in your comment, tha problem begins, when the writers stop caring, but as we saw with other franchises like Star Trek, this process was held for a fucking 39 years.
And yes, it does force you to watch shit you care less about, but that is a good thing from their point. And it does increase the value ov good movies exponentially, since they can use much longer storytelling.
