I've seen a lot of people in the hiring pipeline lately trying to act like they have no influence at all on who gets hired

I suspect managers don't want underlings who can say "I told you so" when a bad hire goes south. If it works that way in a BVSED self-made millionaire, family-owned company like what I work for, it must be a thousand times worse in a big corporashit
