They way they really did him dirty was
- They retconned his parents for really no reason
- They retconned how his time machine works for really no reason
- They changed his entire personality and identity for really no reason
- They changed his visual design because they just couldn't fucking help themselves

No, you misunderstood here.
In the lore as described by the show, the magical cancer is created by usage of the crystals. But noone was using the crystals in the alternate universe, since they were stolen before they were studied.
But yes, the time machine was his (and Jinxes) creation. The power source on the other hand was not.
