it is *so obvious* that the adoption of AI is going to be a broad scale disaster and people are going to become far less capable of independent thought and action as they let chatbots do more and more of their thinking for them

I really don't believe that this case is an AI problem, as much as lack of human contact problem. When you spend years alone (I know a ton about that), your brain will get into a self-reinfforcing loop, where your old habits get so entrenched, that even thinking outside of them becomes difficult and muddy.
Even though, who the fuck knows...
