@Morghur from everything I've witnessed this seems to be true.

Infact the main reason China has such a vendetta against the Western world is because we burned and destroyed all their precious artifacts/treasure that they kept for centuries in pristine condition when we invaded them in the late century.

After that it wasn't hard for the Communist to come in and convince them to destroy the very last of the artifacts they had to quote remove the century of humiliation and regain power by embracing the modern world.

Yeah, i remember that a lot of old artifacts and traditional chinese art was anhialated by the commies in an effort to shed their stale and old past.

@Morghur The Chinese believed that the reason why the Western world was able to advance ahead of them is because the old dynasty was weak corrupt and hung to tradition to a suicidal degree, so in the Communist offered of revolutionary idea of shedding off everything including tradition to regain their honor the Chinese people accepted.

That is why China is so obsessed with trying to beat the Western world at everything in particularly military power because they believe they will lose the mandate of heaven if they do not show strength.

If you want to know what the Chinese looked like without being bug people look at how they behave in Taiwan that's a fragmentary remnants of what they used to be culturally.

I've had enough contact with people from mainland china to know that despite their advancement, they are nothing but bugmen. Peasants with pretensions of grandeur that chase whatever they believe to be advanced and great without knowing why other than "it looks great".

The only good chinks i've met were from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Very good memories with them. And they both hated mainland chinese

@Morghur Those two were untouched by the communist and all of the dynasty and the destruction of their centuries long culture which makes sense as to why you I have the best experiences with them.

The destruction during the opium wars wasn't that extensive. It sucks that some of the things that got destroyed did, but far more had been burned in previous chinese wars and they had plenty left.

I doubt it even remotely compared to the cultural revolution, which was countrywide.

@Eiregoat @Morghur You're correct, but because it was a western power the Chinese saw it as more devastating to their honor and morale which led to the Communist rise.

Its the exact reason they call it the century of humiliation.

More specifically it was the realisation that they were a backwater rather than the apex of civilisation.

Any other time they'd been beaten it was by barbarians who of course immediately adopted superior chinese culture, so the blow wasn't as harsh, whereas the only value Europeans saw in Chinese culture was bringing souvenirs home.
