@holymolyrocky Who the fuck even knows what this is about. Someone is funding a small subset of these people to get the rest fired up. This is some serious Orwellian 1984 bullshit. I want to know who is funding the instigators? How much of the rioting is really organic?
@mewmew @djsumdog @holymolyrocky
People that just want to smash something up get it out of their system fast. It doesn't take much to release some pent up frustration by breaking something.
Reoccuring riots and shit are more than that.
@alyx @mewmew @holymolyrocky Catharsis is kinda a myth. In studies where they make people angry (usually by having them read racist essays), if you put them in a room and allow them to smash things, they actually keep getting angrier. Those who sit in a room calmly .. calm down. You don't really "get out" aggression .. unless you bike/run/do some positive exerciser .. anger just builds on top of itself if you feed it.
@djsumdog @mewmew @holymolyrocky
That's never really been how it worked for me I guess. Sure, I'm still angry after I break something, but I stop feeling the need to break something else quite fast. I don't remember a moment where I broke something, got even angrier, and continued breaking more and more stuff. ![]()

I've been mostly skimming through the video. And there's something that bugs me. Are they being told "you can break everything with no consequences"? Cause I think that might influence behavior.
When I break something at home, I know there are consequences. At the very least I have to clean up what I break, or I need to replace it. Outside, if I break something that doesn't belong to me, there's again the consequence of paying for it or getting in trouble with the police.
I think knowing 100% sure that you will suffer no repercussions will change behavior.
In the experiment, where they breaking just enough to calm their need to break something, or where they going above and beyond just because they could?
@djsumdog @mewmew @holymolyrocky
I think that would change the result drastically. That would literally introduce the "stay calm" portion into the "destroy" part of the experiment.
@mewmew @djsumdog @holymolyrocky
I thought someone would respond with that.
I don't think I agree. I think people hope they will get away, but I don't think any of them are 100% sure nothing will happen to them.
Interestingly enough, this might be an argument for more police intervention during riots and protests. Don't let the participants ever think they can get away with damaging property and creating chaos.
@alyx @mewmew @holymolyrocky that would be an interesting addition to the experiment. You can break things .. but you have to sweep up all the glass afterwards.
