The purpose of surgical masks is not to protect yourself from viruses, the purpose is that if you got it without knowing (or maybe if you're asymptomatic) you're less likely to spread it to others if you wear the mask. Surgical masks protect you indirectly by means of everyone around you wearing one.
If you want to protect yourself directly, you need at least an N95 mask or better.

That's fine. That's pretty much all that's actually needed, to wear it whenever you go to an enclosed space with lots of people.
