The purpose of surgical masks is not to protect yourself from viruses, the purpose is that if you got it without knowing (or maybe if you're asymptomatic) you're less likely to spread it to others if you wear the mask. Surgical masks protect you indirectly by means of everyone around you wearing one.
If you want to protect yourself directly, you need at least an N95 mask or better.
@alyx im never spreadi it to others because i spend 99.9999 percent of my life in my room.

You think you're not spreading, but you don't actually know. As long as you still go near other people a few times a month, the spread potential is still there.
