The purpose of surgical masks is not to protect yourself from viruses, the purpose is that if you got it without knowing (or maybe if you're asymptomatic) you're less likely to spread it to others if you wear the mask. Surgical masks protect you indirectly by means of everyone around you wearing one.
If you want to protect yourself directly, you need at least an N95 mask or better.
@histoire @SteveTheDragon
Wearing the mask doesn't mean you're doing it specifically because some other moron is forcing you to. You're still wearing it cause you're a decent human being and don't want to endanger the lives of others.
And if you do want to endanger the lives of others... I'm saying this in the most sincere way I can, fuck you.
@SystemSock @SteveTheDragon @histoire
I'd rather be a cunt that doesn't want people around me to get my diseases, than those that think not wearing a piece of fabric on their face during a pandemic is "sticking it to the man".
@SystemSock @SteveTheDragon @histoire
>the end: not getting others sick
>the means: wearing a piece of cloth
Such means, much tyranny! Oh noes... I don't think you've noticed, but I'm not advocating for welding sick people shut in their homes, like China did.
>The means sanctify the end.
That might be the first time I hear this phrase, and I'm not sure I understand what it's supposed to mean.
@SystemSock @SteveTheDragon @histoire
>The means: shutting down swaths of the planet,
Who's misrepresenting who? I've argued for wearing a fucking piece of cloth, not shutting down things. You're the one that has a stick up his ass because of other measures that needed to be implemented over and over again precisely because people like you refused to do the minimum necessary of wearing said cloth. So your solution for being pissed off is to keep not doing the most minimum preventative measure possible, that has the least impact on an individual's life of any possible measure, while it probably has one of the biggest benefits in slowing down transmission. The result of your dumbass way of "protesting", was that governments had to institute other, more tyrannical measures, to compensate for your stupidity. Your stuck in your own negative feedback loop. Congrats!
> The means sanctify the end.
You just explained it as "the means don't justify the end".
Here's a principle for you: calculate the negative impact a certain action you take has on you personally. Calculate the benefits it can bring to others. If the negative is basically negligible, and the positive is substantial, not doing the action makes you a jackass.
If you're really gonna tell me that the slight inconvenience a mask has on you personally, is more important to you that the well being of everyone you come in contact with, then you're a jackass that doesn't deserve his freedoms.
Freedom doesn't come cheap. People often need to self-sacrifice to gain freedom. Be thankful that the self-sacrifice that is being asked of you is not fighting in trenches.

LOL. Right back at you, statist faggot.
