Can the battery not be replaced? Or is it that some DRM shit gets erased the second the battery goes out, and basically disabled the console?

Did a quick read. The TL;DR is that the playstation achievements rely on accurate system clock, to prevent people from tricking the system when you got an achievement. If the clock battery dies out, the achievement list fails to work. If the achievements don't work, it won't let you run the game.
It is fixable by connecting to PSN. While inconvenient, it's not a brick situation.
