This is why "green" advocacy is retarded. This is what "green" advocacy brings you, along with shitty straws that are no longer recyclable and now get to rot in your landfill.

@alyx @shpuld i remember discovering the funders of green initiatives were foreign interest groups doing it because they knew it would make us less competitive :gummyoh:

Recycling itself is somewhat a scam anyway. There are very few materials that actually bring a return on investment for recycling, and most of it actually happens in China anyway. You're not actually recycling your own trash, you throw it away into China, thinking they'll take care of it responsibly.

@alyx @icedquinn @shpuld mfw last month some journalists found out that estonian recycling is a scam and depending on the location the recyclable materials get brought to, 0% to 10% of the materials gets 'recycled', the rest is all thrown into common trash and burnt/buried
nobody even got fined for it

🆗
also i always believed this to be true before this actually became true, i was so certain of it, that im literally being lied to. im my brain stuff didnt make sense.
"why the FUCK would i apply to a recycling program if i also have to pay more sometimes???"
"why the FUCK should i follow the recycling program if i get fined for it if i miss a month of recycling?"
"what the FUCK is going on fuck you all"
"why does the same garbage truck sometimes pick up both my trash can AND my yellow bag of recycled and sorted materials????????????????????????????????"
@alyx @icedquinn @shpuld and ofc how did this all pass? because politician's relatives are all partaking and profiting from it
@lebronjames75 @alyx @shpuld this was joked about all the way back to a film called Ghost Dog and then i started cynically referencing it.

@lebronjames75 @icedquinn @shpuld
Something similar happened over here too. Recyclables were packaged and were supposed to be sent to China for the actual recycling part. China rejected them, because the trash wasn't pure enough (wasn't sorted well enough) and sent it back, only to remain stuck in warehouses. They didn't even get sent to be burned or to a landfill.

@lebronjames75 @alyx @icedquinn @shpuld even here in sweden we've had a case like this, a company called Think Pink whose founders managed to insinuate themselves into stockholm high society claimed they would cleanly take care of construction site waste amongst other things, but in reality they just dumped it on public garbage lots, this was discovered once one of them caught fire from the massive pile of construction garbage and spread toxic smoke far and wide. all this only ended once the swat team busted down the door of the main founder, but somehow containers have been popping up on stockholm streets regardless of this.
@whiteline @alyx @icedquinn @shpuld this greenwashing is worse than literally dumping my trash into random fields , almost completely unironically
@lebronjames75 @whiteline @alyx @icedquinn @shpuld One of the reasons that recuycling in the US inefficient is probably due to the fact that you can't get burgers to sort their trash.

I had the pleasure to visit the Recycling Center in Colorado some years ago and we got to see the whole system. There's an extremely convoluted branching sorting system in place, all because the only thing burgers can sort is recyclables and non-recyclables.

First there's a cenveyor belt of everything where humans have to hand all of the retarded shit out that would fuck with the system, like frying pans (yes, really) and other random items. Rest of the separation process is automated I think, and it works really well for the most part. I imagine it's costly to maintain, though. One notable part of the system is a separator that uses a laser to detect if a trash is glass or not and uses a burst of air to push it into route B if it is. Also shredded paper fucks the whole thing up, so that's a whole segment of paper that can't be recycled.

So there's a whole factory's worth of work that wouldn't need to exist if burgers could handle sorting cardboard, glass and metal into different containers.

Fucking burgers.
@moth_ball @lebronjames75 @alyx @icedquinn @shpuld @whiteline this was fascinating. I'm in the UK and recycling depends on area. Some places have multiple categories, some don't. Our local council gives us containers, 1 for paper and cardboard and 1 for metal and plastics. And if you have a garden you can apply for a green waste bin for grass cutting or leaves or whatever. Anything that doesn't fit in you can leave next to it and they'll take that too ie big cardboard boxes
@oxblood @moth_ball @alyx @icedquinn @lebronjames75 @shpuld we have a system where we sort non-organic waste into paper, colored class, clear glass, newspapers etc... bins

organic trash goes into these special green magnetic bacteria-degradable bags that we have to toss into a cycling rfid-locked garbage chute, it's then transported via truck to a biodiesel plant, and that biodiesel then runs the local buses and contributes to fuel for the ovens that drive the city-wide water heating grid used to heat the vast majority of apartments and buildings.
@oxblood @alyx @icedquinn @lebronjames75 @shpuld @whiteline For us here in Binland most if not all places have cardboard, glass, metal and paper bins at the very least, with biowaste depending on area. The "normal" trash is often labeled "burnable waste" so it kinda makes you feel bad if you put metal and glass in there. And they're rolling out plastic recycling too.

Of course not everygone bothers, but the attitudes towards recycling are getting better every generation.
