You probably should have asked her what she meant by "the same" and point out that people would probably interpret those words differently then her. Otherwise, that's a weird thing to get mad about. It should be self evident that if someone thinks "all people are not the same" that they take the words "the same" more literal.

I sometimes use "the same" to mean that people have the same rights, and that things like race don't matter much, but if someone called me out and said "people are not the same", my reaction would just be "well of course they're not the same the same".
